M·S Wawel
Three SecondsM/S Wawel is the ferry that carried a shipment of amphetamines from Świnoujście toward Sweden, making it part of the transport chain Piet Hoffmann’s criminal operation relied on. The vessel also belongs to a personal scene of passage: as Świnoujście recedes, Hoffmann’s unease at sea contrasts with the deliberate, organized work being carried out around him.
Route and crossing
In a late-spring crossing near midnight, Hoffmann watches the houses of Świnoujście diminish into the darkness. He dislikes boats, or perhaps the sea itself, and grips the rail as the shore disappears. The ferry passage gives the route a human dimension: this is not merely a link between ports, but a journey Hoffmann undertakes while frightened and unable to control the surrounding water.
Role in the smuggling route
M/S Wawel forms one leg of a coordinated movement of amphetamine couriers. Fifteen people each carried two thousand grams from Świnoujście aboard the ferry, then continued by train from Ystad; they did not know about the other couriers entering Sweden that night and morning. Their arrivals were distributed across Stockholm, turning the sea crossing into part of a larger operation rather than an isolated shipment.
Return tickets and narrative significance
A separate scene establishes the reverse journey as part of the operation’s logistics. Jerzy produces two tickets for an unnamed woman: one for the train from Stockholm to Ystad and another for a ferry from Ystad to Świnoujście. Hoffmann ultimately gives her the tickets and says they will contact her when they need her help again. The passage identifies the return ferry but does not name it as M/S Wawel; the vessel is specifically connected to the inbound crossing from Świnoujście.
Together, these passages place the ferry at the threshold between countries and between ordinary travel and covert criminal transport. Hoffmann’s fear of the sea sits alongside his command of the operation’s routes: the crossing unsettles him personally even as the ferry serves a larger plan he helps direct.
